Souwers
(glass painting):
The technique of reverse painting on glass came to Senegal
from the Orient in the 19th century. Of purely Islamic
inspiration in the beginning , the "Souwer"
gradually incorporated scenes of daily life and portraits
of Senegalese heroes. They now offer a diversity of
themes. The paintings can be bought anywhere on the
street, but if you want to see an artist actually painting
in reverse, you can go to "La Cour des Maures"
, 69 Avenue Emile Badiane where a painter has an open-air
studio.
